BMW and the artist Jeff Koons have developed a 99 cars limited edition of the M8501 xDrive Gran Coupé model, a new step in their long term close collaboration.
THE 8 X JEFF KOONS becomes the vehicle with the most elaborated design in all BMW history and it will be presented to World audience in Frieze Los Angeles.
The impressive design combines eleven different external colors, from blue to silver, passing from yellow to black.
Only for cars will be painted every week.
High-end materials will be present in the multicolor inner; the finest leather, an exclusive badge signed by the artist.
Seats are made in brilliant red and blue, reflecting the colors of the comic superheroes and the high performance division of BMW M.
The design includes elements form pop art and geometric patterns, honoring the shape of the Series 8 Gran Coupé.
The colored lines that explode in the rear part remind Koons’ own Art Car of 2010. The Pop! Words at both sides, along the steam silhouettes symbolize the power and speed of THE 8 XJEFF KOONS, according to the artist.
Over 200 hours of manual work were used just for the external painting by top qualified professionals in BMW group’s plants in Dingolfing and Landshut. Color samples were often applied with loupes.
“Energic”, “tempting” and “strong” are the main adjectives used by the international autos press after publishing the first design tests in September’21 in the museum Pinakothek der Moderne de Múnich.
“Dozens of engineers and designers have given it all to celebrate our collaboration and make his vision real”, said Oliver Zipse.
Koons himself spent several days in Dingolfing discussin the design options with BMW employees.
“I was thinking intensively on it: What’s Series 8 Gran Coupé essence? Which is the essence of the power? How to create something that symbolizes all the energy of the BMW Series 8 and could also touch the human element?”, said Koons.
