Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has called for an end to the violence in the context of the protests following the dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo, which have left at least one person dead, while reiterating the need for dialogue.

«No Peruvian’s life deserves to be sacrificed for political interests. I express my condolences for the death of a citizen in Andahuaylas,» he said in a message on his Twitter profile.

The Peruvian National Police confirmed hours earlier the death of a citizen in the protests organized at the airport of Andahuaylas, in the Peruvian region of Apurimac.

The Ombudsman’s Office has indicated that the first mortal victim of this weekend’s clashes is a 15 year-old adolescent.

«We reiterate that violence is not part of the right to protest and that police interventions must respect the rights of individuals,» reads a statement.

The regional governor of Apurimac, Baltazar Lantarón Núñez, publicly asked President Boluarte to bring forward the general elections, close the Congress, and to consider the drafting of a new Constitution, less than 24 hours before the beginning of the indefinite popular strike.

According to Andina, peasants from the Peruvian department of Ucayali, in the center-east of the country, also announced that they will hold protests on Monday in favor of the former president.

In Arequipa, groups of miners have blocked accesses in the province of Caravelí, and the Peruvian National Federation of Education Workers (Fenate), founded five years ago by Castillo, has announced a national strike for December 15 to demand new general elections.
