Thousands of people have taken over the Arequipa airport in southern Peru on Monday, sparking a confrontation with security forces that has resulted in at least four injured, according to initial reports by local media.
Some 2,000 demonstrators opposed to the current government have entered the airport’s main runway, while other facilities have been attacked. National Police and Armed Forces personnel have been deployed in the area, reports RPP radio station.
Arequipa is one of the three «high conflict» regions in which Peruvian President Dina Boluarte declared a state of emergency on Sunday to contain a wave of protests that has so far left two people dead. Boluarte also proposed an early election, in April 2024.
