Peru’s Council of State – made up of representatives of all branches of government – has expressed its full support to the country’s president, Dina Boluarte, on Wednesday, while calling for the «reestablishment of public order».

The body issued a statement early this morning in which it takes a position on the convulsive political and social situation in Peru, and expressed its rejection of «violent acts and means that endanger the life and physical integrity of Peruvians».

In this sense, the Council of State has advanced that the judicial system will investigate these violent protests for having affected both public and private property, as well as for impeding «the adequate provision of public services».

«We urge citizens to channel their demands, concerns and proposals through the democratic channels and dialogue processes that the Executive Branch will promote for this purpose,» added the representatives of the State Powers.

Along the same lines, they encouraged civil society to engage in a «permanent political dialogue with public authorities through democratic spaces» in order to reach agreements that advance towards normalization in the Andean nation.

Finally, the Council of State regretted the loss of human lives in the context of the protests registered during the last days in several of the country’s regions, a situation which has led the authorities to decree a state of emergency in the most convulsive territories.

Peru is the scene of political uncertainty and social tension after the then president, Pedro Castillo, announced last Wednesday the dissolution of the Parliament and the decree of an emergency government.

That measure was not supported and finally the president was dismissed by the Congress of the Republic and arrested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. After this, his ‘number two’, Dina Boluarte, was proclaimed president.

Following this, Castillo’s supporters have taken to the streets in various parts of the country in a series of marches that have become increasingly violent. Among their demands is both the expulsion of Boluarte from the Presidency, as well as the calling of new elections.
