French authorities announced early Thursday morning that a minor has died after being hit by a hit-and-run driver in the city of Montpelier following the World Cup semi-final between France and Morocco.
The 14-year-old boy was rushed to a nearby hospital after being hit by a car and died shortly after being treated, the French prefecture of Hérault said in a statement.
The events took place when a group of people, presumably supporters of the Morocco national soccer team, were walking down the street and snatched the French flag hanging in the window of a car.
After that, the car has started a flight and has run over several people, including the minor, as can be seen in a video posted on social networks.
According to the prefecture of Hérault, the vehicle has been found near the scene of the accident and placed at the disposal of the police. In this regard, the French police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith, Mohammed Moussaoui, has condemned on social networks the death of the minor, urging that «everything possible be done to arrest the perpetrator of this heinous crime».
«A motorist ran over Moroccan supporters in Montpellier, leaving a child between life and death. Our prayers for him and our support for his loved ones,» added Moussaoui.
