Peru’s Minister of Education, Patricia Correa, has submitted this Friday her irrevocable resignation as a response to the death of civilian demonstrators at the hands of the police during violent protests in favor of former President Pedro Castillo.
«Our country is facing a political crisis of great dimensions that demand democratic convictions, respect for order and at the same time for the physical integrity and life of every Peruvian citizen, which unfortunately have been violated in recent hours,» Correa said in a statement.
Correa took advantage of the letter to thank the confidence placed in her and expressed his wish that the Government and the President, Dina Boluarte, make the best decisions for the good of the country.
Likewise, in his Twitter profile -where he shared the statement- Correa stated that «the death of nationals has no justification whatsoever» and reproached the State forces for the use of «disproportionate and death-generating» violence.
Peruvian authorities have raised to 20 the number of citizens killed in the framework of the protests in support of Castillo and as a consequence of which the Government decreed this week a state of emergency at national level for 30 days.
Supporters of the former president have been taking to the streets since last week in protest against his dismissal and arrest for having tried to dissolve the Parliament and declare a government of exception. They are also demanding that Boluarte call new general elections.
