The Venezuelan National Assembly has approved this Friday an agreement to defend Alex Saab, considered the alleged front man of President Nicolás Maduro and who was extradited to the United States accused of money laundering.
The president of the Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, has demanded Saab’s freedom before the vote on the document, a proposal of the deputy and first vice-president of the Permanent Commission of Foreign Policy, Sovereignty and Integration, Ilenia Medina.
During the session, Saab’s wife, Camila Fabri, made an extraordinary appearance and expressed to the Assembly and the deputies, as well as to the Venezuelan population, her gratitude for fighting to free him, as indicated by the Chamber in its official Twitter profile.
Washington accuses Saab of laundering $350 million (€295 million) to pay for Maduro’s corrupt dealings through the US financial system. Saab was arrested in June 2020 while on a refueling stopover on a Cape Verdean island, a country that approved his extradition to the United States.
