U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reported Friday that the Biden Administration has launched the Office of China Coordination to address the «geopolitical challenge» Beijing poses to Washington.
Blinken explained in a State Department statement that the objective of this new mechanism is to «work side by side» with experts in China in sectors such as international security, economy, technology, diplomacy or strategic communication.
«Better coordination means a more nimble and consistent State Department policy. It means we are better positioned to work with our allies and partners and to engage even more deeply with each country,» he has argued.
The announcement comes about a month after U.S. President Joe Biden met with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. The current president previewed the launch of this office earlier this year during a speech on the Administration’s approach to China.
A senior U.S. official has explained that the new office will expand the number of diplomats focused on issues related to Beijing and there will also be government personnel from different federal agencies who will rotate to this new mechanism, as reported by CNN.
