Russian authorities in Zaporiyia, eastern Ukraine, reported Sunday the start of work to cover part of the nuclear power plant to protect it from fighting.
«A protective dome is being installed at the ZNPP (plant) over the spent nuclear waste storage facility,» Vladimir Rogov, spokesman for the main council of the Russian military-civilian administration of Russia’s Zaporiyia region, without giving further details, said on his Telegram account.
In its latest assessment, on December 13, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was cautious about the situation around the plant, the largest in Europe and the scene of dangerous cross-shelling for which Russia and Ukraine blame each other.
«The plant continues to receive the electricity it needs for essential safety and security functions from a 750 kV main external power line,» the IAEA statement said.
Work is underway right now to start up mobile, diesel-powered boilers designed to keep critical plant systems from freezing during the winter, including heating the working environment for personnel.
