Authorities in the Republic of Congo have announced the start of a malaria prevention campaign in the capital Brazzaville on Saturday, with the distribution of more than one million mosquito nets.
Specifically, a total of 1.3 million nets will be distributed throughout the capital, door to door, according to the director of the city’s Health Care and Services department, Jean-Claude Moboussé, told Radio France Internationale (RFI). The distribution process will last until December 27 and will be digitized to provide data to the population in real time, according to the Ministry of Health.
The distribution of mosquito nets is one of the most widespread resources to protect the population of a country where most people are dangerously exposed to this disease, especially children: it is the first cause of death among children under five years of age.
One of the latest operations took place in 2019, when the authorities distributed more than three million mosquito nets in the capital and surrounding areas.
