Lebanon’s Health Minister Firas Abiad has announced the start of the second phase of the cholera vaccination campaign after receiving more than one million vaccines this week, at a time when the outbreak declared in October appears to be relatively under control, although there is still «a clear danger».
«The Lebanese health system has managed, in cooperation with international and local partners, to contain the epidemic despite the enormous fatigue caused by the crisis,» Abiad said last Friday at a press conference reported by ‘L’Orient le Jour’.
«Although good work has been done in terms of basic service networks related to drinking water safety and sanitation, much remains to be done because the current situation, unfortunately, favors the spread of the epidemic,» he added.
The country’s health authorities, it should be recalled, have confirmed at least 660 infections and 23 deaths since the outbreak of an outbreak that has severely affected communities in the north of the country and in recent days has swept through the upper Litani river basin.
Lebanon received on Wednesday 900,000 additional doses of cholera vaccines thanks to the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Coordinating Group to start this second phase of vaccinations.
