The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has confirmed that 169 people have died as a result of the devastating torrential rains that swept through the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, between December 12 and 13.
The flash floods left at least 30 people injured, destroyed at least 280 homes and generally forced the evacuation of nearly 40,000 people, especially in the most affected districts of Mont-Ngafula and Ngaliema, according to the latest OCHA DRC balance sheet published last Friday.
Just yesterday ended the three days of national mourning in memory of the dead while the Congolese government has given guarantees of «a dignified and safe burial» for the deceased.
OCHA recalls that, in addition to Kinshasa, the provinces of Equateur, Maniema, Ubangi (both north and south) and Tshopo have been hit by floods since October, which have caused deaths, injuries and numerous damages to houses, infrastructure and farmland.
