Iran blocks access to international websites

Iran’s Internet network has recorded a series of blockages to international websites — ending in .com — on Monday, while users have warned that connectivity is extremely slow.

However, national domains — those websites ending in .ir — are easily accessible, raising concerns that Iranian authorities are trying to isolate the country from the international network.

In fact, the Iranian Parliament has debated several projects in recent years to promote an exclusively national Internet network. This step could now be taken, in line with Tehran’s distancing from much of the West in the wake of Mahsa Amini’s death.

The death of the young Amini, who was arrested for improperly wearing the veil and died in police custody, has led to a series of nationwide protests that have been harshly repressed by the authorities. These episodes have led to sanctions by Western nations.

The more conservative wing of the Iranian parliament has taken advantage of the situation to air its isolationist policies. «Europeans should know that they are dealing with a powerful Iran and that we do not need relations with them,» ultra-conservative leader Esmail Kusari has gone so far as to declare.
