A court in the Greek city of Thessaloniki has released on probation the policeman arrested for shooting dead a 16-year-old Roma teenager, an incident that once led to violent clashes between protesters and security forces.
The court has granted the defense’s request that there is no risk of recidivism, although it has determined that the 34-year-old officer cannot leave Greece while the investigations continue, according to the ERT channel. The release has already prompted calls for further protests.
The teenager was shot by a police officer during a chase after he allegedly left without paying from a gas station where he had filled up 20 euros in fuel. The young man died after nine days in a coma and demonstrations over this case spread to different cities in Greece, including Athens.
