The closest entourage of the still president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, continues to urge him to break the silence he has imposed on himself since he lost the elections last October 30, fearing the loss of voters and followers, as well as political allies within Congress.
The apathy in which Bolsonaro has sunk is being a source of irritation, concern and challenge at the same time for the president of the Liberal Party (PL), Valdemar Costa Neto; for his former running mate, Walter Braga Neto; as well as for the first of his lineage, Flávio Bolsonaro.
All three have urged Bolsonaro to take advantage of his last days in office to show the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that they will have him as leader of the opposition and as an image to strengthen his millions of followers.
The objective is to put him on the road to the whole country as soon as possible to regroup his militancy and to address also the acolytes of the «anti-democratic protests» that are crowded at the gates of the Army barracks demanding a military intervention of the democratic institutions.
Since his defeat against Lula da Silva was confirmed, Bolsonaro has barely been seen and has even restricted his presence in social networks, where he has suspended his weekly Thursday intervention.
He has rarely participated in public events. The last ones were two military ceremonies in which he was seen absent and visibly emotional. A leg infection has been the argument put forward to justify his barely leaving his official residence. «He is not coming in bermudas,» said the vice president, Hamilton Mourao, when asked about this sudden way of acting.
This weekend, Costa Neto met again with Bolsonaro. However, he is still betting on adopting a low profile that is exasperating even his staunchest supporters. «He’s still not saying what he’s going to do. With this roleón, he will end up destroying the patrimony he achieved at the polls» says a Bolsonarista on condition of anonymity to the newspaper ‘O Globo’.
In the face of this silence, others seem to have taken the reins to try not to demobilize the militancy. Braga Neto’s meetings and conversations with her are constant, while Costa Neto has been asking Bolsonaro’s supporters to continue with the protests.
«I want to thank those who are in the streets, those who are in the struggle, keep fighting. Bolsonaro is not going to disappoint anyone, he is a great leader who came to stay,» he said in a video reaction to the decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to uphold the fine of 22.5 million reais (almost 4 million euros) for questioning the electoral result.
