Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has warned that the attack against journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva could have been perpetrated by opposition groups with the aim of affecting his government.
In his usual daily press conference, López Obrador said that the attack against the journalist could be related to the «transforming process» that his government is carrying out and that «some people do not like».
According to the Mexican President, «groups opposed» to the Government could be behind the attack on Gómez Leyva, who would have the objective of splashing the Executive in some way, although López Obrador said he was convinced that the population knows that the authorities are «respectful with life».
«People know very well that we are respectful with life, and we would not dare to do such a thing or send such a thing. It is a matter of conviction», said López Obrador, as reported by the Mexican newspaper ‘El Universal’.
Journalist and writer Ciro Gómez Leyva was the target of a direct armed attack in Mexico City on Thursday night as he was returning home. The episode soon received unanimous condemnation from Mexican authorities.
Now, President López Obrador has appealed to the population to inform the authorities if they know details of what happened.
