Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Tuesday that the United States is «complicit» in the November attack by the Islamic State jihadist group against a mausoleum in the city of Shiraz, which killed thirteen people.
«In addition to the criminals and traitors directly responsible (for the attack), those who support and created the Islamic State are accomplices to this crime,» he said, before criticizing the «spiteful» US government for «creating» the jihadist group, as reported by the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
Khamenei, who met during the day with relatives of several people killed in the attack, said that the United States is «a filthy liar» that maintains «a scandalous behavior based on raising the flag of human rights with its words while in practice it creates dangerous terrorist groups».
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on the mausoleum of Shah Cheragh, perpetrated while the worshippers were performing their prayers. In the aftermath, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that protests following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly, «pave the way» for such attacks.
The mausoleum, which contains the tomb of Ahmed bin Musa — brother of Imam Ali Reza, descendant of Mohammed and eighth imam of the Shiite Duodecimans, the majority in Iran — is the third most important in the country, behind those of Ali Reza himself and that of Fatima Masumé, sister of the latter.
