French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that the government is preparing a bill to strengthen the country’s military strategy and rearm the Armed Forces.
«Five years ago I chose to make major investments in our Army by enacting the law on military planning. We are currently preparing a new law that will allow us to make great progress in this aspect,» he said in declarations to the radio station France Info.
The French president stressed that France must have an army capable of «acting autonomously and choosing its allies for the defense of its own territory as well as of Europe and the Mediterranean».
In addition, he has pointed out that the conflict in Ukraine «makes it necessary to arm itself and have a real military strategy.» «This requires investing in people, training, investment capacity, equipment and innovation,» he said, according to information from the newspaper ‘Le Figaro’.
Macron has explained that the aircraft carrier ‘Charles de Gaulle’ is taking part in exercises to strengthen NATO’s defensive and containment posture against Russia and seeks to put pressure on the country to withdraw from Ukraine.
«It is very clear that war, the return of war to Europe, the play of powers, requires that we are well equipped, that we have a real strategy,» he pointed out in relation to Russia, whom he accuses of «having changed behavior.»
