Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, continues to offer the names of his future cabinet in dribs and drabs, and this Tuesday it was the turn of Camilo Santana, former governor of the state of Ceará, who will head the Ministry of Education.
Santana has prevailed over the current outgoing governor of Ceará, Izolda Cela, who will finally be in charge of the ministry’s Basic Education secretariat. She had been at the head of all the pools, but finally the Workers’ Party (PT) has opted to leave the portfolio in the hands of one of its own.
The decision was made on Monday night after a meeting between Lula, Santana and who will become the next governor of Ceará after these last elections, Elmano de Freitas, also of the PT. The decision will be officially announced later this week, reports ‘O Globo’.
Before Santana Lula announced earlier this month the names of Fernando Haddad to be the new Minister of Economy, as well as those of José Múcio for Defense, Rui Costa for Casa Civil, Mauro Vieira for Foreign Affairs and Flavio Dino to occupy the portfolio of Justice and Public Security.
The first woman to be appointed as a new member of Lula’s cabinet was the singer and composer Margareth Menezes, who will be Minister of Culture, a portfolio that during Jair Bolsonaro’s government had been relegated to a secretariat.
In total there are 37 ministries in Lula’s new government. Some of them, such as Economy, will be divided into four – Finance, Planning, Industry and Commerce, and Management and Development -, or Infrastructure into two – Transport and Ports and Airports. The new portfolios also include those of Indigenous Peoples, Sports, Women, and Cities.
