The Royal Thai Navy said Tuesday that six seafarers are now dead and 23 are still missing after a corvette was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Pachuap Jiri Jan in the Gulf of Thailand.
Navy spokesman Pokkrong Monthatpalin said that search and rescue efforts were continuing and explained that of the seven seafarers found during the day, one was alive, while the other six had already died.
He conveyed his condolences to the families and relatives of the victims and stressed that 81 other crew members are safe, according to information from the ‘Bangkok Post’ newspaper.
Monthatpalin, who pointed out that the bodies of the deceased have been transferred for proper identification, said that fortunately there were no heavy weapons on board and stressed that an investigation will be carried out to determine whether there has been any oil spill at sea.
The vessel left the Sattahip naval base last Saturday for patrol duties and was on its way to Hat Sai Ree in Chumphon province to attend a ceremony.
