Meeting
Meeting of members of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk – MINISTERIO DE EXTERIORES DE PERÚ

The Peruvian Foreign Minister, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, held a telematic meeting on Tuesday with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, to discuss the situation of fundamental rights in the Andean nation.

As detailed by the ministry in a publication on its social networks, Turk has conveyed his «solidarity» with the complex situation Peru is going through, and has shown his willingness to «collaborate together to find a way out that renews social cohesion and confidence in the country’s institutions».

For his part, Gervasi detailed the concrete actions that the Andean Executive has taken to put an end to the protests and restore «order» in the country as a whole, also seeking a «consensual solution» to the political instability «for the benefit of all Peruvians».

In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has invited the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Peru during the first days of next January, as detailed by the Andean diplomatic portfolio in a statement.

Finally, Peru and the High Commissioner have renewed their commitment to «the protection and promotion of Human Rights», at the same time they have expressed their intention to increase cooperation for the «strengthening of capacities in the country’s institutions».

The United Nations agency last week urged the Peruvian authorities to «take immediate measures» to put an end to the deaths of minors in the context of the protests that are shaking the country following the impeachment and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo.
