The U.S. government has accused the North Korean regime of clandestinely supplying weaponry to Russia so that it can be used as part of the war in Ukraine, which would add a new political front to the conflict that erupted in February.
US intelligence attributes to Pyongyang the shipment of artillery shells in «significant» quantities, according to a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, John Kirby, quoted by CNN. Washington suspects North Korean authorities of disguising these shipments as ammunition for countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
In September, Kim Jong Un’s regime denied that it was collaborating militarily with Russia, but Kirby has claimed that there is evidence to the contrary, with the «real destination» of the weapons being nothing like what the Asian country wants to make it look like. «We will continue to monitor whether these shipments are received,» Kirby said.
The North Korean involvement would be added to that of Iran, which is said to have supplied Russia mainly with kamikaze drones, used by Russian forces during the wave of attacks launched in recent weeks on urban centers and strategic infrastructures, mainly energy.
