The Russian government has assured Wednesday that it has taken new positions in the framework of its offensive in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk and stressed that «more than 80 Ukrainian military personnel» have been killed in the fighting, in the framework of the invasion unleashed on February 24 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
«Within the framework of the offensive actions, Russian troops have occupied new dominant elevated areas and lines in the direction of Donetsk», said the spokesman of the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov, who added that in the clashes a tank and three infantry vehicles have also been destroyed, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Donetsk is one of the main epicenters of hostilities in recent weeks. Russia announced in September the annexation of this region together with Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporiyia, all of them partially occupied as part of the invasion. Likewise, Donetsk and Lugansk, located in the Donbas, have been the scene of a conflict with the Ukrainian central authorities since 2014.
