Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Wednesday from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, that he expects a negative response from NATO to his formal request to deploy 1,000 Serbian security personnel in Kosovo.
«KFOR’s behavior is more correct than that of some Western governments. It (KFOR) behaves in accordance with resolution 1244 in a serious and responsible manner,» Vucic said from Baku, where he is on an official trip, the daily ‘Politika’ reported.
The request, which according to Serbia is based on UN resolution 1244, was officially handed over last week to the representative of the NATO mission for Kosovo at the Merdare administrative crossing point.
According to the resolution, Serbia could deploy up to 1,000 military, police and customs personnel at Orthodox Christian religious sites, Serb-majority areas and border crossings, provided such a deployment is approved by the KFOR mission commander.
Apart from the request, which comes in the midst of spiraling tensions in northern Kosovo, Vucic met with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Wednesday, just under a month after the two leaders met in Serbia’s capital Belgrade.
«There are opportunities for cooperation in both natural gas and electricity. Relevant negotiations have taken place. I am sure that practical steps will be taken to export electricity from Azerbaijan to Serbia starting next year,» Aliyev said at a joint press conference with Vucic.
For his part, the Serbian president said that during their meeting they discussed «ways of obtaining gas from Azerbaijan through interconnectors» to be built «together with Bulgaria and North Macedonia».
«I think that with the representatives of the defense sector we learned a lot from Azerbaijan about the activities of the Armed Forces, as well as their structure. We are ready to exchange information on many issues,» he specified.
