The legal team of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo issued a statement late Wednesday asking the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for a face-to-face meeting with the former president in the prison where he is being held.
This has been requested in a letter by Castillo’s lawyer, Wilfredo Robles, alleging that his client is «arbitrarily deprived of liberty through a judicial process vitiated by illegality», all this while the IACHR has initiated meetings with local authorities and relatives of those killed in the protests taking place throughout the country.
In this sense, Castillo’s defense has asserted that last December 20, through the National Human Rights Network, a request was made to the IACHR for a meeting with Castillo, a request that the executive secretariat of the organization accepted.
«Within the agenda of the technical team of the IACHR, a visit to Mr. Pedro Castillo is scheduled,» responded the Inter-American Commission, according to the letter from the former president.
However, so far, the IACHR «has not contacted the defense of the president», according to Castillo’s legal team, which is why they have asked the organization to specify details of the meeting due to fears that it will not take place because of possible political pressures.
«I make this situation public knowledge, to be alert and not to politicize the visit of the IACHR in favor of the interests of the de facto government,» added Castillo’s lawyer.
A delegation of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has begun a series of meetings in Peru where it will meet with local authorities, members of social organizations and relatives of people killed in the latest protests.
Pedro Castillo has been incarcerated in the Barbadillo Prison, in Ate, on the outskirts of Lima, since December 17, after the Judiciary ordered 18 months of preventive detention against him.
The Peruvian Justice decreed preventive imprisonment against the former president while he is being investigated for allegedly committing crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and disturbance of the public tranquility.
