Prime Minister Otárola asks López Obrador to «stop» referring to Peru

The Prime Minister of Peru, Alberto Otárola, has criticized the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for the «regrettable» use he makes of diplomatic relations and has demanded that he «stop referring» to what is happening, since with «much effort» they have achieved peace, despite the almost 30 deaths that have been recorded in the protests in support of former President Pedro Castillo.

«Peru regrets that a brother country is in a lamentable state of diplomatic relations, basically fostered by Mr. López», criticized Otárola, who asked the Mexican president to stop his references to Peru.

According to the new chief of staff of President Dina Boluarte, the authorities have achieved «with great effort that the country is in peace», so they will not allow that «people who have no relation with the Government can demonstrate, causing incessant interference in internal affairs».

Otárola’s words were in response to the Mexican President’s criticism of how Boluarte and his team have been handling protests that have already left some thirty dead and a hundred injured, with security forces highly questioned for their excessive use of force to repress them.

«We regret the decision of the Government of Peru, a government that has been widely questioned for its actions. Above all for opting for repression and not seeking a way out through dialogue, with the democratic method of calling elections as soon as possible,» the Mexican president said recently.

Mexico is one of the countries in the region that has been most vocal about what is happening in Peru since a couple of weeks ago, when former President Castillo unsuccessfully tried to dissolve Congress and call elections. After seeing how unsuccessful his maneuver was, he tried to take refuge in the Mexican Embassy in Lima, however he was intercepted and apprehended by his own security team.

Those who did manage to reach Mexico were his wife, Lilia Paredes, and their two children, as confirmed by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard. «Our country has honored its tradition of asylum,» he emphasized.

Although Peruvian authorities have informed Mexican authorities that Paredes is being investigated for criminal organization, she cannot be extradited as long as the political asylum granted by López Obrador remains in force.
