The Supreme Court of Russia has confirmed Thursday the closure of the website of the newspaper ‘Novaya Gazeta’, as reported by both the court and the publication itself, which has denounced this ruling as a new obstacle to freedom of expression.
The newspaper, which does not follow the official line set by the Kremlin, has been the subject of several lawsuits in recent years, both against its paper and digital editions.
On this occasion, the Supreme Court has ruled on an appeal against a decision made in the first instance by the media regulator, Roskomnadzor, to determine that there was no irregularity in the closure of the website and therefore keep it in force, according to a court statement reported by the Interfax agency.
Novaya Gazeta’ has also confirmed this sentence, in an article in which its founder, Dimitri Muratov, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2021, has accused the authorities of acting not only against the interests of the media, but also of the Russian citizenship.
In this regard, the newspaper has accused the authorities of acting at all times with a censorious bias. Muratov went to court wearing a blindfold to cover the eyes of the statue in front of the building, which depicts the goddess Themis, symbol of the supposed impartiality of Justice.
