The Peruvian Foreign Minister, Ana Gervasi, announced on Thursday that the Andean Government delivered the judicial file of Lilia Paredes to the Mexican authorities along with the safe-conducts so that the wife of former president Pedro Castillo and her children could travel to Mexican territory.
According to Gervasi, the Mexican government «is aware of the judicial situation» of Paredes, which has meant that it is the authorities of that country who have to make the decision to grant asylum or not.
In this sense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has detailed that, after consulting the Ministry of Justice, the diplomatic portfolio concluded that it had to comply with its obligation to deliver the safe-conducts to the former first lady and her children, according to RPP.
«Peru rigorously complies with its international obligations, in the same way that it demands that other countries comply with the principles of international law, such as non-intervention», said Gervasi, alluding to the statements made by Mexico.
The Peruvian government has reproached on successive occasions the attitude of the Mexican authorities regarding the political and social situation the Andean nation is going through. For Peruvian representatives, the statements made by the Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, represent an «interference» in internal affairs.
Likewise, although Lima has agreed to grant safe conduct to Castillo’s family, Mexico’s offer to give shelter to Paredes and her children has not gone down well, as the former first lady is under investigation as an alleged co-perpetrator of a crime of criminal organization.
