U.S. State Department Secretary Antony Blinken confessed Thursday that he has discussed Ukraine’s peace proposal with G7 partners, which he called «a good start.»
Asked during a press conference whether the White House had reviewed the Ukrainian peace proposal communicated during Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski’s visit to Washington, Blinken detailed that it was one of the issues he had recently discussed with G7 members.
«I don’t want to put deadlines on anything, but I can tell you that we are studying what (the Ukrainian president) has proposed. I just got off the phone with our G7 partners, and this is one of the things we’ve talked about,» the secretary of state said, according to a statement from his department.
«I think countries around the world are watching this and are seeing that, again, Ukrainians want peace. Look, nobody wants peace more than President Zelenski and the people of Ukraine. They are the ones who are suffering aggression. But it has to be just and lasting,» Blinken stressed.
Meanwhile, he maintained that Ukrainians are the ones who should make the decision on how a hypothetical negotiations could be carried out.
«They have to decide where they go, how they want to get there, when they want to get there, of course with our very, very strong support. So, fundamentally, they are the ones who are going to make these decisions,» the State Department head asserted, detailing that the Ukrainians are focused on regaining the entirety of their territory.
«In our view, the best way to get to that day is to maintain our support for Ukraine, to make sure that it’s doing well on the battlefield, that it continues to have the support it needs to sustain itself against the Russian onslaught, including against its energy infrastructure, as well as economic support,» he added.
