Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Anatoli Antonov, has accused the U.S. authorities of waging a «proxy war» while warning that there is a «high» risk that the two powers will «clash» at some point.
«Today no one is hiding the real objectives of the White House policy towards us. On all TV channels, political commentators talk about the need to intensify the US proxy war against Russia,» he said.
In an interview for the TASS news agency reported by CNN, Antonov stressed that Washington is instrumentalizing the war in Ukraine for its «proxy war» against Russia, which could lead to «a clash between the two great powers».
Placing all the responsibility for the tensions on the United States, Antonov pointed out that Russia is merely trying to ensure that Moscow’s «concerns» regarding national security «are not ignored».
However, Antonov regretted that relations between the two powers are going through a sort of «ice age», and denounced that the work of the Russian diplomatic legation on US soil is taking place in an «atmosphere of hostility and mistrust».
Regarding the visit of the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, to Washington to meet with his American counterpart, Joe Biden, Antonov reproached that the trip shows that neither Ukraine nor the United States «are ready for peace».
