Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has regretted that, «unfortunately», the «warmongers» in the national Parliament have given the «green light» to the shipment of armaments to the Ukrainian Army in the framework of the Russian invasion.
Radev, who in recent months has been against the supply of arms to Kiev, pointed out that the decision of the National Assembly «obliges» the Executive to sign a contract for such aid, according to the public radio station BNR.
Now the situation could become even more tense for the already fragile political stability of Bulgaria, since the Socialists – who supported Radev in the presidential elections – had already warned this week that if the President did not veto the arms shipment, they would appeal to the Constitutional Court.
«The president has repeatedly made statements that this would drag us into war, and now it seems that his cabinet and his defense minister signed this treaty,» Socialist Party leader Kornelia Ninova has reproached.
However, Rudev has already responded to these warnings of the Socialists and has stressed that «it makes no sense» to veto the law and added that trying to take the matter to the Constitutional Court «will serve no purpose».
The president explained that a presidential veto cannot alter the texts of an international treaty, just as it is «impossible» to appeal to the Constitutional Court to deal with an international treaty that has already been ratified.
At this point, he called on the institutions and the various parliamentary forces to adhere strictly to the law, especially in view of the fragile political situation in the country.
For the moment, all attempts to form a new government in Bulgaria have failed, although now it will be the former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov who will be in charge of forming an Executive to avoid the calling of elections in March, which would be the fifth elections in barely two years.
