Mali’s Tuareg rebel coalition announced Friday that it is suspending its participation in the 2015 peace agreement and demanded an international mediation process at a neutral venue in the face of the junta’s unwillingness to comply.
«All the movements unanimously decided to suspend their participation in the follow-up and implementation mechanisms of the agreement until the holding of an internationally mediated meeting on neutral ground to decide the future of the pact,» the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP) said Friday in a statement.
The Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), an alliance of Tuareg nationalist groups and Arabs from the North, which met this week, regretted the «persistent lack of political will of the transitional authorities» to put an end to hostilities in the north of the country, in the Azawad region, where the separatists are demanding greater autonomy.
It also stressed in a statement that its decision is also based on the open security challenges that have caused «several hundred deaths and thousands of displaced persons in the regions of Ménaka, Gao and Timbuktu».
«The security situation has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, and the CSP-PSD urgently appeals to all humanitarian organizations to come to the aid of the populations in need,» it said.
With the 2015 Algiers Agreement signed between the government and the Tuareg separatist groups, the latter became part of the Armed Forces, a ceasefire was sealed and it was proposed to give more powers to the northern part of Mali, as well as the creation of a regional security force and a development plan.
