The Ministry of Economy of the Taliban authority in Afghanistan has issued a decree on Saturday ordering all NGOs, whether national or international, to suspend the employment contracts of women until further notice.
In the decree, reported by TOLO News, the Economy Ministry also warns that any organization that does not abide by this directive may see its license to operate in the country suspended.
The aforementioned TV channel has contacted Abdulraman Habib, a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy, who confirmed the news, as detailed by TOLO News on its official profile on the social network Twitter.
The reason given by the Taliban authorities is the failure of the female employees to comply with the government’s rules regarding the hijab, the veil that women must wear in public, reports the DPA agency.
This measure comes in the same week in which the Ministry of Education banned women from university education, also alleging non-compliance with the dress code, among other alleged violations of the law.
The decision has quickly drawn criticism from the international community, including much of the Islamic world. The Taliban announced on Friday the opening of an internal debate to discuss the criticism.
