The Peruvian Judiciary has admitted on Saturday the appeal filed by former President Pedro Castillo to annul the preventive detention ordered against him following his arrest after attempting to dissolve Congress to avoid being subjected to a new motion of censure.

Judge Juan Carlos Checkley has adopted the measure after determining that the appeal complies with the formalities required by law, at the same time that he has admitted for processing the appeal of prosecutor Alcides Chinchay to impose 18 months of preventive imprisonment to former Prime Minister Anibal Torres for the same case.

Thus, Checkley will send both appeals to the Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court for their evaluation in a hearing on a date to be determined and in which the parties involved will be present, as reported by the Peruvian radio station RPP.

Castillo was deposed by the Congress as president of Peru in a motion of censure that went ahead after the former president announced the dissolution of the Parliament and the establishment of a government of exception. The leftist Democratic Peru party presented on Friday a proposal to Congress to declare the motion of censure null and void.

To date, 30 people have been killed in the repression of the protests in support of Castillo, which have provoked criticism against the security forces and against the now president, Dina Boluarte, who took office after the arrest of the now ex-president.
