The National Justice Board (JNJ) has suspended former Peruvian prosecutor Zoraida Ávalos for 30 days for appointing the daughter of her friend María Zavala, a member of the JNJ, as deputy superior prosecutor of the city of Piura.
The agency made the decision during a hearing held last December 16 for which it qualified as «serious misconduct» the actions of Ávalos, to whom a disciplinary process was opened due to a «serious conflict of interest», as reported Sunday by the Andina news agency.
It also specified that, although there were no specific provisions for the appointment, the prosecutor did not maintain an «impeccable conduct in appointing the daughter of a person with whom she had friendly ties and comadrazgo».
Ávalos is also facing a constitutional process, approved this week in the Permanent Commission of the Peruvian Congress, for allegedly having violated the Constitution in the framework of the suspension of the investigations against former president Pedro Castillo.
Ávalos opened a preliminary investigation –which he later suspended– against Castillo for the alleged crimes of influence peddling and collusion as a result of the visits to the Government Palace and to the Breña house of businesswoman Karelim López and the subsequent awarding of contracts in Provías Descentralizado and Petroperú for the purchase of biodiesel.
