Some Republican senators have shown their anger at U.S. House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for allowing the $1.7 trillion (€1.59 trillion) budget for the next fiscal year to pass.
Critical voices, such as Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson and Utah Senator Mike Lee, have insisted that it would have been better to delay the approval of the budget until the Republican Party took control of the Senate on January 3.
«The leadership of our party turned against Republican voters, turned against the Republican base, turned against the majority of Republican senators,» Lee criticized during an interview with ABC.
The senator from Utah has denounced that this attitude of McConnell, allegedly against the interests of his party, has been repeated on previous occasions, although this has been «the straw that has broken the camel’s back,» according to the news portal The Hill.
For his part, Johnson has criticized those party colleagues who consider the approval of the budget, and has made a sports simile, comparing the situation to a heavy defeat but in which a good deed is celebrated in the last second of the game.
The Senate loosely passed the spending bill on Thursday of last week with 18 Republican senators voting in favor, who argued that it was the best way to ensure higher defense spending for next year.
The package includes up to 858 billion in defense spending–nearly 808 billion euros–a 9.7 percent increase over the previous year, while non-defense spending has risen below the rate of inflation.
With the ‘green light’ from the House of Representatives last Friday, Congress has finally passed a $1.7 trillion budget bill for the next fiscal year and avoided a government shutdown.
