The United Nations mission in Kosovo (KFOR) reported on Monday the launching of an investigation into an armed «incident» that occurred on Christmas Day in an area very close to one of its patrols on European territory.
As reported by KFOR in a publication on its Facebook channel, the incident, which occurred in the Kosovar town of Zubin Potok, involved «unknown armed persons», although no injuries or material damage were reported.
«We are working to establish all the facts. As meetings between all parties are planned, it is important that all involved avoid any rhetoric or actions that could cause tensions and aggravate the situation,» the NATO mission remarked.
In this line, the agency has asked all parties and actors to refrain from carrying out «shows of force» that could be considered provocative and to focus on finding solutions to «ensure the safety of all communities».
Thus, KFOR has insisted once again that the best way to resolve the situation is through dialogue, which the mission’s Command is in charge of supporting and facilitating.
The Kosovar territory, scene of constant tensions with Serbia, is experiencing an escalation of its historical crisis, which led Belgrade to request NATO two weeks ago to deploy Serbian security personnel, an unprecedented request to date.
KFOR, for its part, has repeatedly asserted that it has increased its presence and patrols in recent months in Kosovar territory, and has stressed that it remains «vigilant and fully capable» of complying with the United Nations mandate to maintain a presence in all the communities of Kosovo.
