Senator Simone Tebet of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) has accepted the invitation of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to take over the Ministry of Planning, after frustrated attempts to take over the portfolios of Social Development or Environment.
This was hinted at by the future Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, who, after meeting this Tuesday with the leader of the MDB, Baleia Rossi, informed that they have received «a positive signal» regarding the invitation launched by Lula.
It is not discarded that the announcement will be made on Wednesday, together with the rest of the positions yet to be named, thus leaving the conformation of the new government of Lula da Silva, who will probably meet this Tuesday with Tebet.
The agreement for Tebet to head Planning thus puts an end to all the speculations that had been launched since he announced that he would support Lula in the second round of the elections, in the midst of the reluctance of the Workers’ Party (PT) to have him assume a social portfolio.
While waiting for Lula to give more details in the next few days, the MDB expects Tebet to have control of the Investment Companies Program (PPI), in charge of privatizations and concessions to the private sector, although the projects would be coordinated from Casa Civil, according to Brazilian media.
The ministry’s organization chart will also include the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), in addition to the area, within International Relations, specialized in international development banks.
