On Tuesday night, the Mexican Government published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the reform that extends paid vacation days from six to twelve for all workers, which will take effect on January 1, 2023.

The agreement reached in mid-December by Mexican parliamentarians has been published in the evening edition of the DOF after this morning the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, informed that he had already signed the document, reported ‘El Sol de México’.

With its entry into force, Mexicans will be entitled to twelve paid vacation days starting from the first year of work, double the six days currently regulated by law. In addition, each year there will be a two-year increase in vacation days until reaching 20 days in 2029.

Likewise, as from the sixth year of a worker in a company, the vacation period will increase by two days for every five years of service until reaching 30 days of vacation, and from there until reaching 32 days of mandatory rest for 35 years of service.

The law, promoted by both Morena -the governing party- and Movimiento Ciudadano, was approved with 116 votes in favor, zero against and zero abstentions in the Senate, and was sent to the Federal Executive for publication in the Mexican Official Gazette.
