Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assured Wednesday that U.S. diplomatic authorities have guaranteed that Washington will not send specialists to Ukraine to instruct Ukrainian soldiers in the use of Patriot air defense systems.
In an interview for the Russian television channel Chanel One, Lavrov pointed out that this communication between Moscow and Washington has been carried out through the diplomatic channels that the Russian Embassy in the United States still keeps operational.
«They explained to us quite extensively that this is not planned, precisely because the Americans do not want to and will not fight Russia directly. The Patriots will be put into action in a few months until the Ukrainian Army masters this technology,» he said.
The U.S. administration of President Joe Biden announced last week a new military aid package to Ukraine worth $1.85 billion, including the first shipment of Patriot air defense systems.
From Russia, President Vladimir Putin quickly responded to Washington’s maneuver by assuring that his troops would destroy every Patriot supplied to Ukraine, and took the opportunity to criticize the quality of the U.S. defense system while praising the Russian S-300 system.
