The Prosecutor’s Office of El Salvador reported Wednesday that the arrest warrant against the mayor of Soyapango, Nercy Montano, has been executed in an operation coordinated with the National Police.
«In compliance with our mission to protect the interests of society, tonight, the arrest warrant for the mayor of Soyapango was executed, in an operation coordinated with the National Civil Police of El Salvador (PNCSV),» said the Prosecutor’s Office in a statement on the social network Twitter.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office said that the mayor will be prosecuted for misappropriation of labor quotas, breach of duties to the detriment of the Public Administration and embezzlement of public funds.
Workers of the mayor’s office of Soyapango denounced this Tuesday the non-payment of Christmas bonus and December salary by the authorities. In addition, a protest was held in the municipality due to these allegations.
«THE BAD THINGS MUST BE UPROOTED».
The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has reacted to the capture of the mayor of Soyapango, assuring that in his country, «corruption was never fought and much less against officials of the same party of the Government».
«But if we want to move forward as a society, we must understand that this is a necessity and that it is unavoidable. We must uproot the bad so that the good can grow,» he said in a post on his Twitter profile.
Bukele’s government is characterized by the implementation of a state of emergency — in force since March 27 — aimed at combating the gangs that caused dozens of deaths in the country every day.
During the period of the state of exception, the Salvadoran government is empowered to suspend certain freedoms and guarantees in order to facilitate the deployment of military and police in the streets and municipalities where these homicides occurred.
Specifically, this measure allows the suspension of the right to assembly, the increase of the maximum detention period from 72 hours to 15 days, the elimination of the right to defense and the elimination of the right to not be tapped in telecommunications.
This policy has earned the country, and specifically President Bukele, criticism not only from national opposition sectors, but also from a large number of Human Rights organizations, which warn of arbitrary detentions and lack of guarantees for prisoners.
