The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has criticized the decision of the Peruvian Congress to approve a motion to reprove the «acts of meddling» of the Colombian and Mexican governments in Peruvian politics, stating that Peru violates the American Convention on Human Rights.

According to the Colombian president in a message on the social network Twitter, the removal of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo from office would require a firm sentence from a criminal judge, as stated in the American convention.

«Article 23 of the American Convention (of Human Rights) establishes the political right to elect and be elected. To take away this right, a criminal judge’s sentence is needed,» he said.

«We have a president in South America popularly elected without being able to exercise his office and detained without a criminal judge’s sentence», Petro has highlighted, affirming that such fact represents a breach of the American convention.

«The violation of the American Convention on Human Rights is manifest in Peru. I cannot ask the Government of Venezuela to re-enter the Inter-American Human Rights system and at the same time applaud that such system is violated in Peru», Petro has ironized in a tweet.

On Wednesday, the Peruvian Congress approved a parliamentary motion rejecting «the constant acts of interference in the internal affairs» of that country by the presidents of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro.

Following the dismissal and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo for his announcement of the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a government of exception, the presidents of Colombia and Mexico have been critical of Peruvian institutions and have defended the legitimacy of the former president.
