The South African Police have confirmed the discovery of the bodies of about 20 miners in the town of Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg, but the cause of death is not yet known.

«The Gauteng Police can confirm that on 2 November 2022 at around 15.00 hours (local time), members of the Police in Krugersdorp responded to a call following the discovery of 19 bodies of suspected irregular miners in one of the active mines in the area,» it said.

He said in a statement that «preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased were moved and placed at the point where they were discovered» and added that «foul play is not suspected at this stage». «The autopsy will determine the cause of their deaths,» he said.

«All necessary actors were summoned to the scene. A request for an investigation has been registered,» the Police has highlighted.

The incident comes months after armed persons attacked a film crew in Krugersdorp in July during the filming of a music video in an abandoned mine, an event in which several women were raped and which resulted in the theft of jewelry and cell phones.
