German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday lamented the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, whom he described as an «intelligent theologian» with a «controversial personality.»
«For many, not only in this country, he was a special leader for the Church,» the German leader asserted on his Twitter account. «The world has lost a formative figure for the Catholic Church,» he maintained before passing on «his thoughts» to Pope Francis.
The former pontiff between April 2005 and February 2013 died Saturday morning at the age of 95, the Spanish Episcopal Conference confirmed.
His health condition had worsened last Wednesday, as Pope Francis announced at the time, when he said he was «very ill».
