Ukrainian authorities have charged on Monday the governor of the Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, after she was accused of allegedly financing Russian military groups in the framework of the invasion of the territory.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has indicated that Nabiullina has been accused of «organizing the introduction of the ruble in regions of southern and eastern Ukraine» and thus displacing the local currency, the hryvna.
«As a result of a series of investigative actions, the SBU has collected evidence of the involvement of the head of the Central Bank of Russia in the financing of military groups of the aggressor country,» Ukrainian Intelligence has indicated, Ukrinform agency has reported.
Thus, he explained that charges have been brought for violation of Article 110 of the Criminal Code for «conspiracy to change the borders of the Ukrainian state and violate the order established by the Constitution, entailing serious consequences and loss of human lives». In this regard, she stated that the authorities plan to place her on an international wanted list.
This is not the first time Ukraine has charged Russian citizens for violating its Criminal Code. In 2019, a Kiev court convicted ‘in absentia’ Duma Deputy Speaker Svetlana Savchenko of high treason in connection with the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
