The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, said Tuesday that the «usurpation» of the Malvinas Islands by the United Kingdom «should embarrass the whole world», after inaugurating a memorial after the 190th anniversary of the British occupation of the archipelago.
Fernández remarked that «an act of colonialism» such as the «usurpation» of the Malvinas Islands «should shame the whole world», for which he considers that «the slogan» that the claim of sovereignty over the islands «unites» the Argentine society «is true».
«Argentina does not see its sovereignty as full while those lands continue to be usurped by the United Kingdom (…) We are not at peace with ourselves if we do not continue claiming, for those who left their lives, for those who continue fighting», he has indicated, in declarations collected by the agency Télam.
Thus, the Argentine president added that his government will continue «insisting that the Malvinas are Argentine». «Claiming sovereignty and that Argentina enjoys territorial freedom should attract the attention of the most powerful people in the world», he said.
Argentina claims sovereignty over the Falklands–Falklands in British nomenclature–so it is usually wary of any gesture by the UK, even if it derives from the royal family. In 2016, it criticized the fact that Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, spent six weeks receiving military training in the archipelago.
Last month, Buenos Aires summoned the UK ambassador to the country, Kirsty Hayes, to protest a series of military exercises carried out near the Falkland Islands.
