Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who supported Kevin McCarthy’s candidacy for House Speaker, has declined to reiterate this endorsement following the chaos of Wednesday’s voting day, in which the hard-line wing of the party broke away from the official line.
«Everyone is calling me because they want my support, but we’ll see what happens,» Trump has said in statements to NBC News. «That’s all I can say,» added the former president, in an ambiguous position on which McCarthy’s team has not commented.
The official candidate, who aspired to assert the new Republican majority in the US House of Representatives, has already failed in three votes due to the discomfort of a more radical sector agglutinated in the Freedom Caucus, related precisely to former President Trump.
A score of Republicans have supported an alternative candidate, Jim Jordan, which has left McCarthy with 202, ten below even the Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. It takes 218 votes to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.
