Authorities in Uganda have charged Abbey Musinguzi, the promoter of a New Year’s Eve event at a shopping mall in the capital, Kampala, with negligence, which resulted in a stampede that left ten people dead.

The charges against Musinguzi, known as ‘Abitex’, have been filed a day after his arrest for his alleged responsibility in the incident, including the closure of several areas of the space, which left only one door for 20,000 people to exit the building.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has called for investigations to be speeded up, said Vice President Jessica Alupo, who attended the funeral of two of the children killed in the stampede on Tuesday.

«The president has said he wants a detailed report of the incident (…) and the police are still looking for people on the run to help in the investigations,» she said, as reported by the Ugandan newspaper ‘Daily Monitor’.

For her part, Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who also attended the funeral, said that the parents did not make any mistake in going with their children to the celebration. «It was God’s plan, because it is usual for people to go out and come back after the celebrations,» she said.
