Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva plans to travel to Argentina at the end of January to resume Brasilia’s participation in the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), one of the region’s main political discussion blocs.

Lula has planned an international tour of up to five countries in the first quarter of this year which will take him to the United States in February for a meeting with President Joe Biden or to Portugal and China, according to the Brazilian version of CNN.

«I am waiting for you with open arms and much affection, as the Argentine people are waiting for you», said the Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, on his official Twitter profile, who specified that the CELAC meeting will be on January 24.

The previous Brazilian government of Jair Bolsonaro left CELAC in January 2020 due to the presence of Venezuela and Cuba in the regional organization. On several occasions, former Brazilian Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo alleged that there was an alleged «communist horizon» that seeks to «strangle» Brazil.

It was not the first time that Bolsonaro’s extreme right-wing government decided to leave regional organizations. In April 2019, alleging that it was a creation of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez to exercise leftist power in the region, Brazil announced that it was leaving the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).
