Mexico’s Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López Hernández, has confirmed the existence of an «international investigation» against former Mexican President Felipe Calderón for alleged arms trafficking.

According to López Hernández, the investigation is related to the ‘Fast and Furious’ operation by which the United States, through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), deliberately introduced some 2,500 firearms with the aim of identifying and arresting buyers and distributors.

The Mexican representative has accused former President Calderón and his closest team of having «bathed the country in blood» and having ended his term in office as an «arms dealer», according to the Mexican newspaper ‘La Jornada’.

«When we talk about arms purchases, everyone remembers how in Calderón’s time, not only was the country militarized but, in the height of shamelessness, he and his government ended up as arms dealers,» he said.

Lopez Hernandez recalled that during that time, arms that should have been destined for the Armed Forces and the Police ended up in the hands of organized crime, which resulted in the arrest in the United States of former Public Security Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna and the investigation of Calderon.
